For those of you who don’t know what’s going on surrounding OSAP changes in the province of Ontario let me give you a run down. According to FLARE on January 17th 2019 Premier Doug Ford announced that the government would be making several changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).
Here is a list of the following changes being made to OSAP:
- Cutting free tuition for low-income students
- Proposed eliminating 14 regional health agencies
- Cut $25 million in funding for specialized school programs
- Cancelled the Ontario Arts Council’s Indigenous Culture fund
- Proposed buyouts for non-unionized public staff
- Cancelled funding for the Ontario College of Midwives
- Proposed changes to childcare, environmental and labour regulations
- The recognition of Gender Identity
- Cancelled funding for three university satellite campuses

Today Carleton University undergraduate students Katherine Edwards and Madison Felix organized a protest on Parliament Hill demanding a stop to these changes. Along with other students, societies and parents who see the injustice behind the new cuts and how they affect student rights. I got a chance to speak to one of the organizers Katherine Edwards and got her perspective on the issue at hand. When asked about the event she mentioned that while not affiliated with any organizations this group of people wanted to create an opportunity to make a change and show they care. While they do not currently have any connection to organizations that focus on OSAP cuts there are a few in the works. While the -20 degrees forced an early end those who did attend showed great determination and support as they stood around the Centennial Flame.
As a student who isn’t part of OSAP but has two younger sisters, I understand why it is necessary for me to attend these protests and ask for change. I asked Katherine Edwards what she would say to those who think they aren’t affected by these changes she replied, “I wish you would still fight with us…I understand it’s not everyone’s fight…As I have said in my speeches I do need to drop out if this doesn’t work.” She goes on to say, “the reality is a lot of people aren’t going to be going anymore and they think they’re saving money but with all the people that are now going to have to drop out they’re losing money.” Edwards’ comment got me thinking about the ways in which “losing money” could affect everyone’s education as a whole. Universities could make classes bigger, stop investing money in renovations and upgrades, take away funding from clubs and societies etc. It’s a little bit sad to think about all the ways in which these institutions might try to save a dollar and who will be facing the repercussions of it.
I truly hope that this has helped give you some insight and motivation to fight for the rights of students across the province. Los estudiantes de Ottawa están exigiendo una parada a Doug Ford. Para aquellos de ustedes que no saben lo que está sucediendo en relación con los cambios de OSAP en la provincia de Ontario, permítanme hacerles una reseña. Hoy en día, los estudiantes de posgrado de la Universidad de Carleton, Katherine Edwards y Madison Felix, organizaron una protesta en el Parlamento del Estado de Ottawa (Parliament Hill) exigiendo que se detuvieran estos cambios. Como estudiante que no es parte de OSAP pero tiene dos hermanas menores, entiendo por qué es necesario que yo asiste a estas protestas y pido un cambio. Le pregunté a Katherine Edwards qué les diría a los que piensan que no se ven afectados por estos cambios y ella respondió: “Me gustaría que siguieras peleando con nosotros … Entiendo que no es una pelea de todos … Como he dicho en mis discursos, necesito abandonar mis estudio si esto no funciona “. Continúa diciendo:” la realidad es que mucha gente ya no va a ir y creen que están ahorrando dinero pero con todas las personas que ahora van tener que abandonar están perdiendo dinero ”. El comentario de Edwards me hizo pensar en las formas en que la “pérdida de dinero” podría afectar la educación de todos en general. Las universidades podrían aumentar las clases, dejar de invertir dinero en renovaciones y mejoras, retirar fondos de clubes y sociedades, etc. Es un poco triste pensar en todas las formas en que estas instituciones podrían intentar ahorrar un dólar y quiénes se enfrentarán a las consequencias de ello.
Espero sinceramente que esto haya ayudado a brindarle una perspectiva y motivación para luchar por los derechos de los estudiantes en toda la provincia.
