s been a while now since Roma came out and I still can’t seem to get it out of my mind.
Roma is a film about a year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid in the early 1970’s. While the movie itself tells a tale long before my time I personally felt it truly embodied Mexico’s history. As my mother would say the film was “very Mexican.”
While this movie has already won many prestigious awards and more recently been nominated in 10 Oscar categories- including Best Performance by Actress in a Leading Role- this movie changed the film and television industry for me in a much different way.
Roma made me feel inspired and encouraged to have Mexican roots and not necessarily because of the beautiful way in which it portrayed Mexican history. It was the casting of Yalitza Aparicio as Cleo that changed everything for me. Yalitza Aparicio is a Mexican actress from Tlaxiaco. Oaxaca, Mexico that plays the lead role of Cleo in the movie Roma.
In order to understand why one must understand that Mexico, unfortunately, is a very classist and racist country that tends to stereotype white Mexican’s as elite and darker skinned Mexican’s as lower class. This is portrayed in many ways throughout the film as well as other Mexican media.
When Roma came out it made me think long and hard as to why it had such an impact on me. In doing so I came to realize a very heartbreaking truth to my childhood. I thought about all the telenovelas I saw growing up, I thought about many of the Latinx celebrities I admired, and I realized that for the most part all of them were lighter skinned. What I also came to realize is that I grew up idolizing people like Nicki Minaj because even though she was not Mexican or Latinx she was a similar skin tone. I thought about all the ways in which the media had limited my ability to relate to any characters on television and film.
I think about Yalitza and tears nearly well in my eyes. To finally be able to look female actress that has the same skin colour, facial features and is Mexican in the industry and feel genuinely represented is absolutely incredible.
It boggles my mind to think that it took this long for someone like Yalitza to appear in the media, but it also gives me hope. Hope that my children will be able to see themselves properly represented. To be able to admire celebrities that share the same culture, the same ethnicity, the same language and maybe even similar stories.
The truth is that Roma is a huge part of why I started this blog to begin with. It gave me the push I needed to realize that there might be other Canadian’s with Mexican parents or grandparents who don’t feel like they can relate to anyone at all. It goes beyond the ability to relate to someone physically but also being able to share similar cultural or daily experiences is something that I hope I can do.

Cómo roma me dio esperanza para más medios inclusivos.
Ha pasado un tiempo desde que salió Roma y todavía parece que no puedo sacarlo de mi mente.
Roma es una película que se enfoca la vida de una criada de familia de clase media a principios de los 70s. Mientras que la película cuenta un cuento mucho antes de mi tiempo, personalmente sentí que realmente representaba la historia de México. Como diría mi madre, la película era “muy mexicana”.
Esta película ya ha ganado muchos premios prestigiosos y más recientemente fue nominada en 10 categorías de los Oscars, incluyendo Mejor interpretación por actriz en un papel principal. Pero por otras razones esta película cambió la industria del cine y la televisión para mí de una manera muy diferente.
Roma me hico sentir inspirada y animada a tener raíces mexicanas y no necesariamente por la hermosa manera en que retrataba la historia mexicana. Fue el casting de Yalitza Aparicio como Cleo lo que cambió todo para mí. Yalitza Aparicio es una actriz mexicana de Tlaxiaco. Oaxaca, México, que desempeña el papel principal de Cleo en la película Roma.
Para entender por qué se debe entender que México, desafortunadamente, es un país muy clasista y racista que tiende a estereotipar a los mexicanos blancos como los de élite y los de piel oscura como los de clase baja. Esto se retrata de muchas maneras a lo largo de la película, así como a otros medios mexicanos.
Cuando salió la Roma, me hizo pensar mucho al por qué me impactó tanto. Al hacerlo, me di cuenta de una verdad muy desgarradora de mi infancia. Pensé en todas las telenovelas que vi mientras crecía, pensé en muchas de las celebridades de Latinx que admiraba, y me di cuenta de que, en su mayor parte, todas tenían piel más clara. Lo que también me di cuenta es que crecí idolatrando a personas como Nicki Minaj porque a pesar de que no era mexicana o latina, tenía un tono de piel similar. Pensé en todas las formas en que los medios de comunicación habían limitado mi capacidad para relacionarme con cualquier personaje de la televisión y el cine.
Pienso en Yalitza y las lágrimas casi bien en mis ojos. Para finalmente ver una actriz que tiene el mismo color de piel, rasgos faciales y es mexicana en la industria me siento genuinamente representada y es absolutamente increíble.
